Romeo Malette Forest
The Romeo Malette Forest is a boreal forest management unit in northeastern Ontario, located in the Timmins–Cochrane region and covering a large area of productive Crown forest. The forest is historically connected to the Malette forestry business name, which was important in northern Ontario sawmilling and forest products. It is managed under Ontario’s Sustainable Forest License and Forest Management Plan system, with responsibility assigned to the current license holder and overseen by Green First Forest Products Inc.
The forest has long supplied timber to regional mills and contractors, especially spruce, pine, fir, and poplar species typical of the Boreal Shield. Its management history reflects the broader shift in Ontario forestry from company-controlled timber limits and earlier Crown management arrangements toward modern Sustainable Forest Licenses, independent forest audits, long-term forest management plans, regeneration requirements, and more formal public and Indigenous consultation.
