Northshore Forest
The Northshore Forest is a Crown forest management unit along the north shore of Lake Huron, stretching through the Algoma–Sudbury north shore region around communities such as Nairn Centre, Thessalon, Blind River, Spanish, and surrounding areas. It is run by Northshore Forest Inc. Ontario’s license record shows the Northshore Forest license was approved by Order-in-Council in 1999 and most recently amended in 2019. The forest’s modern boundaries reflect the amalgamation of former management areas, including the former Mississagi and Spanish River Crown management units.
Historically, the area was shaped by river drives, railway and road access, sawmilling, pulpwood harvesting, and the industrial forest economy along the Lake Huron north shore. Today, the forest supplies conifer and hardwood fiber to regional mills while management planning must account for rugged Canadian Shield terrain, waterways, recreation, tourism, wildlife, Indigenous interests, and long-term regeneration.
