Pineland Forest
The Pineland Forest is a northern Ontario Crown forest management unit within the boreal forest region, historically linked to the forestry economies of the Timmins, Chapleau, and surrounding northeastern Ontario area. It is managed through Ontario’s Crown forest planning framework by the designated Sustainable Forest License or Crown management authority for the unit, with forest management plans setting out harvest areas, renewal, tending, access roads, monitoring, and protection measures.
The name reflects the importance of pine and mixed boreal forest types, although the unit also includes spruce, fir, aspen, birch, wetlands, lakes, and wildlife habitat. Historically, the forest developed as part of northern Ontario’s expanding pulpwood and sawlog supply network, with logging access shaped by railways, rivers, and later forest roads.
Modern management emphasizes long-term sustainability, regeneration after harvest, protection of non-timber values, and compliance with Ontario’s Crown Forest Sustainability Act and forest management planning manuals.
