Algoma Forest
The Algoma Forest is a large Crown forest management unit in the Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma region of northern Ontario. It is run by Clergue Forest Management Inc. (CFMI), which was formed in 1997 as the shareholder-based Sustainable Forest License holder for the Algoma Forest. Ontario records show the Algoma Sustainable Forest License was granted to Clergue Forest Management Inc. approved in 1997, with later license amendments and extensions.
The forest’s history is closely connected to the rise of the Sault Ste. Marie forest-products industry, including pulp, paper, sawmilling, and the broader industrial development associated with the Clergue name in Algoma. The Algoma Forest has long served as a major fiber source for regional mills while also supporting tourism, hunting, fishing, trapping, recreation, wildlife habitat, and watershed values.
Its current Forest Management Plan period is listed by Ontario as 2020–2030.
